Condoms & safer sex

Does wearing two condoms make sex safer?

Why doubling up on external condoms increases friction and what to do instead.

Short answer

No. Do not wear two external condoms at once. The friction between them can make them more likely to tear. Use one new condom that fits well and follow the instructions on the package. More layers do not mean more protection here.

One correctly used condom is the plan

Put it on before genital contact, check the use-by date and package, and use a new condom for each act of vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Use compatible lubricant if needed for comfort and reduced friction.

What about an internal condom?

Do not use an internal condom and an external condom at the same time either. They can catch and slip against each other. Choose one method for that act of sex.

If a condom breaks or slips

Stop and replace it. If pregnancy or STI exposure is possible, seek timely advice from a pharmacist, contraception provider, or sexual-health clinic.
