Why am I spotting after sex while on the pill?
How pill-related breakthrough bleeding and other causes can overlap, plus when spotting after sex needs checking.
Short answer
The pill can cause breakthrough bleeding, especially when you are new to it, have missed pills, or have changed how you take it. But bleeding after sex can also have causes unrelated to the pill, including dryness, infection, pregnancy-related causes, or cervical changes. If it recurs, arrange an appointment rather than assuming it is normal for you.
Timing is useful information
Note the pill type, missed or late pills, date of your last period, pregnancy possibility, and whether the spotting happens only after sex. Bring this information to a clinician or contraception service.
Check for other symptoms
Discharge, pelvic pain, pain during sex, painful urination, sores, or a new partner may mean STI testing or examination is appropriate. A negative pregnancy test does not explain every cause of bleeding.
Know the urgent signs
Seek prompt medical advice for heavy bleeding, severe lower-abdominal pain, dizziness or fainting, pregnancy possibility, fever, or feeling very unwell.
