Why am I sore and swollen after sex?

What can cause genital soreness or swelling after sex and when it needs medical attention.

Short answer

Soreness and mild swelling after sex can happen after friction or prolonged activity, but allergy, irritation, infection, or an injury can also cause it. Rest from anything painful and avoid putting soap, perfume, or random creams on the area. Seek urgent care for severe or rapidly increasing swelling, intense pain, bleeding that will not stop, fever, or trouble passing urine.

Give irritated tissue time to settle

Pause penetrative sex and any activity that rubs the sore area. Loose clothing and a cool compress wrapped in fabric may be soothing. Do not put ice directly on genital skin.

Look for patterns, not a diagnosis

Note whether it happens after a particular condom, lubricant, toy, position, or type of sex. Tell a clinician about new discharge, itching, sores, painful urination, or a new partner, because these details affect testing.

Get checked if it keeps returning

Recurrent swelling or pain is a good reason for an appointment even if it resolves between encounters. You deserve a plan that makes sex feel safe and comfortable.
