Why does my penis burn after sex but not when I pee?

Possible causes of penile burning after sex, why symptoms cannot diagnose the cause, and when to get checked.

Short answer

Burning in the penis after sex, even without pain when you pee, can come from friction, skin irritation, an allergic reaction, urethral inflammation, or an STI. The location and timing cannot diagnose it. Avoid sex and products that worsen the burn, and arrange sexual-health or primary-care advice if it persists, returns, or comes with discharge, sores, swelling, or testicular pain.

Irritation can happen without an infection

Friction, vigorous masturbation, a new condom, lubricant, soap, or other product can irritate penile skin or the urethra. Stop the suspected product and use plain water for gentle external washing. Do not put antiseptics or scented products into the urethra.

STIs can be subtle

Urethritis and some STIs may cause a sore penile tip, discharge, or burning, and sometimes symptoms take days or weeks to appear. Tell a clinician about condomless oral, vaginal, or anal sex so they can choose the right testing.

Get urgent care for red flags

Severe testicular pain or swelling, fever, inability to pass urine, blood in urine, rapidly worsening pain, or a painful erection that will not go away needs urgent assessment.
