Can bacterial vaginosis pass between women?

What is known, what remains uncertain, and how to seek care for bacterial vaginosis without assumptions.

Short answer

Bacterial vaginosis, often called BV, is not classified as a single STI, and its cause is not fully understood. BV is more common among women who have sex with women, and partners can have similar vaginal bacteria, but research does not support a simple rule that one person “gave” BV to another. If you have new discharge, odour, itching, burning, or pain, get assessed rather than self-diagnosing.

BV is about a change in vaginal bacteria

BV involves a change in the usual balance of bacteria in the vagina. It can happen in people of any relationship type. Symptoms overlap with yeast infections and STIs, so the same symptom does not point to one cause.

What partners can do now

Avoid douching or perfumed washes inside the vagina. Clean shared toys between use and use a new condom on toys for each person and body opening. If symptoms recur, tell the clinician about partners and shared toys so they can give advice that fits your situation.

Testing can clarify the cause

A clinician may examine you or take a sample to distinguish BV from other causes. This matters because different conditions need different care. Do not use a partner’s result as your own diagnosis.

When to seek prompt care

Arrange care soon for pelvic pain, fever, bleeding that is unusual for you, sores, pregnancy, or symptoms that are severe or worsening. These need individual assessment.
