Can genital herpes spread when there are no sores?

Why herpes can sometimes pass on without visible sores and how to have a practical prevention conversation.

Short answer

Yes. Genital herpes can sometimes be passed on when no sores are visible, because the virus may be present on the skin without a noticeable outbreak. Avoiding sex during symptoms, using barriers, and having an honest conversation can reduce risk, but no method removes it completely. A clinician can help you understand your specific diagnosis and options.

Why no sores does not mean no risk

Herpes can be shed from genital or oral skin without a blister or ulcer. This is one reason it can be passed on by people who feel well or do not know they have it. It does not mean transmission is certain after every contact.

When risk is higher

The risk is highest when sores, tingling, burning, or other warning symptoms are present. Avoid oral, vaginal, anal, and skin-to-skin genital contact during those times. Do not share sex toys unless they are cleaned and covered with a fresh condom between people.

Barriers help, with limits

Condoms and dental dams cover some, not all, skin that may carry herpes. They can reduce risk but cannot guarantee prevention. This is worth saying plainly so partners can make informed choices together.

Get individual advice

If you have new painful blisters or sores, arrange a prompt sexual-health assessment while they are present. Seek urgent help for difficulty passing urine, severe pain, fever, or if you are pregnant and think you may have a new herpes infection.
